Veolia Services Indonesia, the France-based global waste management company, is building the largest polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or bottle-to-bottle recycling and reprocessing factory in Pasuruan district, East Java. This is a continuation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Veolia Indonesia and Danone-AQUA, Indonesia’s largest bottled water company, in 2018 on the construction of the recycling factory.
The factory is set to open in early 2020, with 7,000 square meters of building area. Once in operation, it targets to produce 25,000 tons of recycled PET yearly with 80 local workers. Raw materials for the factory are sourced from plastic waste collection actors across cities in Indonesia. Danone-AQUA will be the final user of the recycled products. This is in line with the company’s commitment to collect plastic waste more than what it produces in 2025.
As a long-term vision, Veolia Services Indonesia is looking to collaborate across Indonesia and beyond, to achieve a sustainable, large-scale change in plastic collection and recycling in Indonesia. The newly established factory will also support the Indonesian government effort to reduce plastic waste by 70% by 2025 and strengthen its recycling ecosystem.
