Singapore and International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Launch Innovation and Technology Laboratory

November 2021

Singapore and the 95-member International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) have launched the Joint IHO-Singapore Innovation and Technology Laboratory, a first-of-its-kind facility aimed at generating technologies to more accurately map the world’s seas and oceans. Using Hydrography – the science of surveying and charting the depths of the sea, shape of the seabed, and tides and currents – the laboratory aims to use tools and data to make maritime safer and enable better protection of the marine environment.

The Joint IHO-Singapore Innovation and Technology Laboratory will provide a dedicated space to test and evaluate new ideas to enable their smooth transfer into practice. The laboratory will start with the following two projects:

  • Investigate the automated conversion of the IHO S-57 Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC) to the IHO S-101 ENC. This project supports the development of the Dual-Fuel Electronic Chart Display and Information System.
  • Develop a digital Infrastructure to improve information exchange between harbors and hydrographic offices. The outcome of this project will inform the IHO S-131 Marine Harbour Infrastructure product specifications.
