Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has launched a new standard, SS 715:2025 – Energy Efficiency of Data Center IT Equipment, which aims to cut the energy consumption of IT equipment in data centers by at least 30%. The standard helps data center operators and equipment users choose devices that meet international efficiency benchmarks, while also promoting techniques such as workload consolidation and virtualisation to raise utilisation rates.
A key requirement of the new guideline is that the IT equipment must be capable of operating safely at ambient temperatures up to 35 °C, which allows data centers greater flexibility in cooling operations. Data centers can also apply for grants from IMDA to help upgrade existing equipment to meet the new standard.
Currently, IT hardware accounts for about 60% of total energy usage in a typical data center, making it a major target for efficiency improvements. With growing demand from compute-intensive workloads, especially as artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent, Singapore expects that implementing this standard will help manage rising energy needs and support sustainability goals.
This initiative is part of Singapore’s broader effort to stay resilient in a world of rapid technological change and global economic shifts. Alongside this, the government is reviewing its long-term economic strategy, engaging stakeholders, and planning for policies that ensure competitiveness while pushing for green, efficient infrastructure across sectors.
