Solar-powered Smart Pier Launched in Thailand to Advance Sustainable Mobility

May 2025

Thailand’s Ministry of Transport officially opened the Rama VII Smart Pier, a solar-powered facility located in Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi. The pier is part of a government initiative to develop 29 smart piers along the Chao Phraya River by 2027. The project is a joint effort by the Marine Department, Nonthaburi Province, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), aiming to modernize urban water transport while reducing environmental impact.

The smart pier integrates solar panels with a battery energy storage system (BESS), managed by an advanced energy management platform. This setup provides a stable, clean power supply and contributes to energy efficiency. The design also features a light-reflective surface that changes color with daylight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

Under EGAT’s “5-Smart” framework, the pier incorporates digital technology to improve operations and safety. It includes features such as automated passenger counting systems and accessible facilities, including ramps and restrooms for individuals with disabilities.

The broader smart pier network, once completed, is expected to serve over 53,000 passengers per day and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 280,230 tonnes. Twelve piers have already been completed, with 17 still under construction.

Authorities state that the project supports Thailand’s goals for green infrastructure and sustainable tourism, particularly in areas like Koh Kret. By combining renewable energy and eco-friendly design, the initiative is positioned to enhance urban mobility while contributing to local economic development and environmental preservation.
