Thai Board of Investment Seeks to Develop Opportunities for Subcontractors

February 2020

The Thai Board of Investment (BOI) is working to develop the subcontracting sector to serve targeted industries such as aerospace, medical devices, electric vehicles, smart electronics and rail systems. The BOI Unit for Industrial Linkage Development (BUILD) aims to strengthen Thai subcontractors to improve their global competitiveness. This would involve helping companies deal with the impact of technological disruptions and technology transfers between purchasing companies and subcontractors.

BUILD has conducted several programs to connect foreign assemblers and manufacturers who are seeking to source parts and components from Thai enterprises. The unit organized business matching events for local and foreign companies from the Medical equipment, automotive and machinery fields to meet each other. The BOI estimates that it assisted Thai subcontractors to the extent of THB 38 billion in 2019.

The BOI has partnered with five universities in Thailand, Chulalongkorn, Chiang Mai, Mahidol, Thammasat and Naresuan to build a network promoting industrial research & development activities expected to lead to production results.

BUILD will also jointly organize the 2020 Subcon Thailand with UBM Asia and the Thai Subcontracting Promotion Association from 13-16 May at BITEC.
