Thailand’s First Large-Scale Floating Solar Plant Connected to Grid

July 2020

In June 2020, it was announced that the first large scale floating solar power facility in Thailand, with a capacity of 12.5 MW, had started supplying power to the national grid. The announcement was made by JA Solar, a leading Chinese manufacturer of high-performance photovoltaic products, which provided the project with high-efficiency PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) modules.

The plant is built on an industrial reservoir, and the generated electricity will be delivered to manufacturers via underground cables. In parallel, the plant will become a solar park to promote the development of local renewable energy to the general public.

This first large scale floating solar plant in Thailand highlights the potential that the region holds for the renewable energy industry, with demand for electricity expected to rise sharply in the coming years, while governments are seeking to lower carbon emissions.
