Thailand Selects Saab Gripen E/F for Air Force Modernization

July 2025

The Royal Thai Air Force has confirmed its decision to select the Saab Gripen E/F as its next-generation multi-role fighter aircraft. This announcement marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to modernize its air defense capabilities. Saab, along with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), will move forward with the next phases of the procurement process in coordination with the Thai government.

As of now, no contract has been signed and no formal order has been placed. The selection indicates Thailand’s intent to proceed with the Gripen E/F platform, which offers advanced combat and surveillance capabilities. Saab’s proposal also includes a long-term offset program that aims to support Thailand’s national security and strategic autonomy. While specific details are yet to be finalized, the package is expected to include technology transfer, local job creation, and investments across various sectors of the Thai economy.

The Gripen E/F is currently used or ordered by several countries and is designed to operate in complex threat environments. Saab has stated that the aircraft would enhance Thailand’s airpower with modern technology and operational flexibility.

According to Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, the company welcomes the Royal Thai Air Force’s selection and is prepared to support Thailand in the transition. The next steps will include negotiations and formal agreements, which may lead to industrial collaboration between Sweden and Thailand in defense and related sectors. The procurement aligns with Thailand’s goal of enhancing national defense through modern and independent capabilities.
