USD 218 Million Projected to Upgrade Noi Bai Airport’s International Terminal

November 2021

According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the upgrading of Terminal 2 (T2) at Noi Bai International Airport in the capital Hanoi would cost more than VND 4.98 trillion (USD 218.5 million), in order to increase its annual capacity from current 10 million to 15 million passengers.

A feasibility study report on the terminal expansion project has been submitted to the government for verification. Japan Airport Consultants, Inc. and Vietnam National Construction Consultants Corporation collaborated to compile the study. The upgrade is anticipated to take place from the fourth quarter of 2022 through the third quarter of 2024. The whole project will be funded by capital from ACV.

Terminal 2 was first opened in January 2015, and it is dedicated to serving international flights for Hanoi and the Northern Key Economic Region, which comprises seven cities and provinces. T2 was designed to handle 10 million passengers per year during the 2015-2020 period, to be increased up to 15 million for the following ten years. However, according to the Civil Aviation of Vietnam, the number of passengers already exceeds T2’s planned capacity, reaching more than 11 million in 2019. Meanwhile, the domestic terminal T1 serves around 15 million passengers.
