Vietnam to Accelerate Use of AI in Healthcare

October 2020

Vietnam’s medical and tech experts recently participated in an online seminar organized by several ministries and local authorities in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Vietnam and the Aus4Innovation program, a USD 8 million development assistance initiative that aims to strengthen Vietnam’s innovation system.

At the seminar, the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology highlighted that artificial intelligence (AI) could play an important role in improving the productivity and efficiency of healthcare delivery, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ministry specifically asked the National Lung Hospital to utilize modern technology to detect tuberculosis cases early and treat them completely, as the country works towards zero cases of tuberculosis by 2030.

Vingroup’s Big Data Institute has been developing an AI application to diagnose lung diseases and breast cancer using X-ray images. Trials for this application are ongoing at Military Hospital 108, the Medical University’s Hospital, and Vinmec.

According to the Director of Health Strategy and Policy Institute, besides diagnosis, other AI applications with significant potential in the Vietnamese healthcare sector include treatment, management of health history data, and training.
