Wisconsin and Thailand Partner to Strengthen Dairy Farming Through Knowledge Exchange

July 2025

Wisconsin’s expertise in dairy farming is playing a key role in supporting the development of Thailand’s dairy industry through a growing partnership between the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Thai institutions. This collaboration began after Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand approached UW–Madison to explore ways to strengthen Thailand’s dairy systems. Experts from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, with funding from Thailand, visited Chiang Mai and Bangkok to meet with farmers, universities, and government officials.

Dairy farming in Thailand started in the 1960s under King Rama IX and now includes 15,800 farms averaging 36 cows each. However, productivity remains low, with cows producing only one-third the milk of their U.S. counterparts. Heat stress is a major challenge, with daily temperatures often above 90°F. Wisconsin experts are advising Thai farmers on cooling systems, improved diets, feed storage, and milking protocols to reduce diseases like mastitis.

Thailand’s dairy cooperatives and university partnerships offer a structure for rapid knowledge exchange. Wisconsin faculty are also exploring how lessons learned from tropical farming can support U.S. agriculture as climate extremes become more common.

The partnership benefits both sides. Thailand gains technical support in genetics, nutrition, and equipment use, while Wisconsin businesses may find export opportunities. The collaboration is further supported by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, U.S. Embassy in Thailand, and the active Thai chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association.

Plans for return visits and further engagement are underway, with both sides aiming to deepen cooperation through research, training, and technology exchange.
