As the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) gains ground in its anti-insurgency efforts, the focus is shifting towards bolstering external defense capabilities. This involves adapting the AFP Modernization Program (AFPMP) in Horizon 3 to safeguard the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasizes the need for equipment like multi-role fighters, naval ships, and submarines to project defenses in the West, North, and East, including the Philippine Rise.
The revised Horizon 3 aims to increase the number of multi-role fighter aircraft, although specific details are still in development. Manila’s assertiveness in its EEZ is part of a broader approach, marked as a ‘paradigm shift’ in addressing West Philippine Sea issues, while maintaining a ‘friend to all policy’ with other nations.
The military’s modernization efforts hinge on the timely enactment of the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
