Amazon to Invest USD 6 Billion for a New Infrastructure Region in Malaysia

April 2023

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be launching a new AWS infrastructure Region in Malaysia, with the primary aim of connecting local developers, startups, entrepreneurs, and enterprises, as well as government, education, and nonprofit organizations. AWS plans to invest MYR 25.5 billion (USD 6 billion) in Malaysia by 2037.

The new AWS Region will help customers with data residency preferences to store data securely in Malaysia, enable customers to achieve lower latency, and serve demand for cloud services across Southeast Asia. Some of the existing Malaysian corporate businesses and public sector agencies using AWS include Petronas, Astro, Axiata, Bank Islam, CelcomDigi, Johor Corporation, PayNet, Cybersecurity Malaysia, the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Pos Malaysia, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Baba Products and Carsome. AWS anticipates Malaysians to eventually make up 80% of AWS’s staff in the country.

Three Availability Zones will be part of the infrastructure when it launches, adding to the 99 Availability Zones that already exist across 31 different regions of the world. Each Availability Zone is connected by redundant, ultra-low latency networks and has independent power, cooling, and physical security. AWS has one of the most comprehensive and in-depth service offerings, including cloud computing, mobile services, storage, analytics, compute, databases, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, and other cloud technologies. AWS also has plans to launch 15 more Availability Zones and five more AWS Regions in Canada, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Thailand.
