Malaysian Space Agency to Improve Strategic Cooperation with Industry, Plans Space Launching Site

April 2023

It has recently been announced that the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) through the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) will be leading the Space Tech Nexus event at Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA23), to take place from May 23 to 27, 2023.

MYSA will focus on strengthening the strategic cooperation network of Malaysia’s space sector with local and international industry players at the Space Tech Nexus, which includes the Langkawi International Space Forum (LISF) 2023, MoU (memorandum of understanding) signings, bilateral talks, commercial exhibitions, technology updates and other key activities. The Space Tech Nexus is part of the implementation of the National Space Policy Action Plan 2030 otherwise known as Malaysia Space Exploration 2030 (MSE2030).

Additionally, MYSA will be working with Sabah State Government and the Sabah Space Industrial Corporation to build the world’s 16th space launching facility, which would make Malaysia the ninth country to do so. Sabah is uniquely positioned to be a launching facility due to its proximity to the equator line. Sovereign Sengalang Sdn Bhd has been appointed to undertake feasibility study to see if an international Space Launch Industrial Centre can be built in the identified location. The state aims to create between 300 and 500 aeronautical space companies that can provide up to 5,000 jobs in the area.
