British Retailer Sports Direct Expands Presence in Malaysia

UK-based Sports Direct, a retailer for sports, fitness, fashion, and lifestyle products, is gearing up to launch two new flagship stores and an additional five outlets across Malaysia. With an existing network of 34 stores nationwide, Sports Direct is poised for further expansion in the region.

The flagship stores, set to open at Mid Valley Mega Mall and Sunway Pyramid in Kuala Lumpur by the year’s end, will provide customers with spacious shopping environments. The Mid Valley Mega Mall outlet, covering 21,530 square feet in the South Court area, and the Sunway Pyramid branch, spanning 22,117 square feet on Level 1, aim to enhance the shopping experience. Moreover, Sports Direct plans to introduce five additional outlets in key locations such as Sunshine Mall Penang, Bintang Mall Miri, Aeon Nilai, Aeon Kota Bahru, and Mayang Mall Terengganu.

Frasers Group Asia, Sports Direct’s Malaysia subsidiary, has unveiled its expansion strategy for 2024, emphasizing its broader aspirations within Southeast Asia, commencing with Indonesia. It has disclosed a joint venture partnership with PT Map Active, an Indonesia-based sports, leisure, and kids’ retail entity, signaling its commitment to regional growth and market penetration. Managing Director Paul Gibbons asserted the company’s dedication to revolutionizing traditional retail spaces, ensuring flexibility, and improving product accessibility to meet evolving consumer needs.
