The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans for its fourth Green Energy Auction (GEA-4), scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024. This auction will emphasize energy storage solutions alongside maximizing the country’s renewable energy infrastructure. The focus will be on Integrated Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Systems (IRESS), which combine renewable energy sources with storage technologies like batteries, flywheels, and pumped hydro systems. These systems allow for the storage of excess energy during peak generation periods, optimizing energy usage when demand is high.
The Philippines has been accelerating its renewable energy efforts, with the third Green Energy Auction (GEA-3) set for the third quarter of 2024. This auction will primarily target renewable energy facilities that are ineligible for feed-in tariffs, such as geothermal and pumped storage, though run-of-river hydro will also be included.
The DOE has successfully conducted two auctions in the past two years, resulting in a total of 5,306 MW of renewable energy capacity committed to the grid. The upcoming auctions aim to further expand the country’s renewable energy portfolio. In May, the DOE announced that the Philippines was on track to install nearly 2 GW of additional solar capacity, including 590 MW allocated for battery storage.
