Philippines Unveils AI Strategy Roadmap 2.0 to Boost Economic Growth

August 2024

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), launched the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Roadmap 2.0 (NAISR 2.0) and the Center for AI Research (CAIR) on July 3, 2024. This initiative is a key part of the Philippines’ broader science, technology, and innovation-driven Industrial Strategy, which aims to harness AI’s transformative potential to boost the economy and enhance the quality of life for Filipinos.

Building on the initial AI roadmap introduced in 2021, NAISR 2.0 incorporates the latest technological advancements, including Generative AI, and addresses new challenges such as ethics and governance. The roadmap is designed to position the Philippines as a Center of Excellence in AI research and development, driving economic growth and promoting inclusive development.

CAIR, the country’s first AI hub, will focus on creating AI solutions for regional challenges like sustainable agriculture, urban planning, and disaster resilience. By advancing multidisciplinary research and developing skilled R&D personnel, CAIR aims to strengthen the country’s competitiveness in science and technology while ensuring responsible AI adoption.

These efforts underscore the Philippines’ objective of becoming a destination for AI-driven innovation and investment, aligning with national goals for industrial transformation and economic diversification.
