The Thai government has introduced a new policy which will require all new motorbikes sold in Thailand from 29 March 2020 to meet Euro 4 emission standards. A draft version of the law was approved by the Prime Minister’s cabinet in November 2019. Representatives from the Thai Industrial Standards Institute have informed more than 40 motorbike manufacturers in the country of the requirements.
Motorbikes are the most popular form of transportation around Thailand. There are an estimated 20 million motorbikes on Thai road. This step is intended to help address Thailand’s PM2.5 dust and pollution problem. The Euro 4 standards also require a 50% reduction from the prevailing Euro 3 standards of carbon monoxide emissions.
Manufacturers and importers found in violation of the policy will face either prison for a period not more than two years or a fine not exceeding THB 2 million (USD 64,000), or both. Distributors may face jail time up to a maximum of 6 months, or be subject to a fine of up to THB 500,000 (USD 16,000), or both.
