Thailand’s Bumrungrad International Hospital Embraces Wellness Tourism

September 2020

Bangkok-based Bumrungrad International Hospital (BIH), one of the largest private hospitals in South East Asia, has teamed up with real estate developers to set up luxury wellness centers for wellness tourism. The move is aligned with the Thai government’s intention to promote the trend in the post-COVID world.

BIH’s luxury wellness project is slated to be launched in September 2020. Up to 33 of 66 villas will be first developed within Bang Krachao on the Chao Praya River, known locally as the ‘green lung’ of Bangkok. The concept aims to deliver bespoke healthcare services in a relaxing environment.

Currently, BIH serves around 1.1 million patients each year, including over half a million international patients from 190 different countries.

In related news, BIH recently became the first hospital in the world to be awarded Global Healthcare Accreditation’s Certification of Conformance with COVID-19 Guidelines for Medical Travel Programs.

According to Karen Timmons, Chief Executive Officer, Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA), “The COVID-19 Certification of Conformance provides a seal to patients, buyers, and other stakeholders demonstrating that a medical travel program’s operational protocols, practices, and procedures have undergone an external review and reflect international best practices designed to keep traveling patients safe.”

GHA’s COVID-19 guidelines for Medical Travel Programs are unique in that they focus on the entire care continuum, including providing guidance for travel, as well as interactions with the healthcare organization, hotel and ground transportation.
