Lesaffre, a French manufacturer specializing in fermentation and microorganisms, recently inaugurated its latest venture in Indonesia: a new manufacturing facility dedicated to the production of compressed and dry yeast. The new facility supplements the existing operational blending plant for baking ingredients located in the Surabaya region.
This new factory, built on 9.8-hectare land in Malang, East Java, will produce 45,000 tons of yeast per year. Construction started in 2021, with an investment value of IDR 1.2 trillion (USD 76 million). The factory will be operated by PT Lessafre Sari Nusa, a new entity established by Lessafre and PT Citra Bonang, an Indonesian chemical manufacturer.
Previously, the company imported its yeast products to Indonesia. However, with the commencement of production at the new factory in Malang, the products will now be marketed not only within the local market but also to the wider Asia Pacific region.
The establishment of the factory is anticipated to stimulate the economy of Malang Regency by increasing the income of sugarcane farmers in the area. The selection of the factory’s location was influenced by the abundant supply of molasses, a key raw material utilized in yeast production. The local government expresses optimism that the presence of Lesaffre’s yeast factory will expedite the economic advancement of sugarcane farmers.
