Grab Working with Indonesian Government to Develop EV Ecosystem

January 2020

Grab and the Indonesian government have launched an Electric Vehicles (EV) Ecosystem Roadmap to accelerate EV adoption in Indonesia and create a more Environmentally sustainable transport network in the country. By 2025, Indonesia plans to have 2 million EVs on the road.

As part of the plan, Grab has announced partnership with carmakers, such as Hyundai, Astra Honda Motor (AHM) and Gesits, the latter two of which are electric motorcycle manufacturers in Indonesia, to launch a trial of electric vehicles cars and electric motorcycles in the Greater Jakarta area. For two-wheeled vehicles, Grab is testing 20 electric motorbikes with AHM and Gesits in order to test the feasibility of EV motorbikes on all trips with Grab, including food and goods delivery services in Jabodetabek.

At the launch event, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia, symbolically handed over 20 key units of Hyundai Ioniq Electric to Grab to be used as part of the trial. Users can choose to use EV from their Grab application starting in 2020. The South Korean car maker, which invested in Grab last year (2018), is Grab’s first four-wheeler EV partner in Indonesia.

Grab already has one of the largest electric vehicle fleets in South East Asia, with 200 units of the Hyundai KONA model in Singapore in a trial launched in January 2019. Grab has also partnered with Singaporean electricity company, SP Group, to use the public EV charging network for the Grab fleet EV.

In Indonesia, Grab has negotiated a deal with state electricity firm, PLN, to co-build a network of EV charging stations. In addition, the company seeks to co-develop policies that would aim to make EVs more affordable for the masses.
