HCMC Seaport System Requires More Effective Mechanisms

February 2023

The investment in the USD 6 billion international transshipment port in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is said to be confirmed while waiting for the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s official policy. The largest seaport organization in the world, MSC Group, and Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) have proposed to the government that a sizable seaport be built in HCMC’s Can Gio District.

Can Gio Port has a scale of approximately 7.2 km wharves. With a throughput capacity of 10-15 million TEUs, the port will be able to accommodate the largest container ship in the world of 24,000 TEUs. There are seven investment phases in the project, with the first phase development expected to commence in 2024 and complete in 2027. The final phase will be invested and operational in 2040.

VIMC stated that the port will handle up to 80% of international transshipment cargo from MSC’s clients, with just 20% of the remaining cargo being imported and exported from Vietnam. Basically, the new port will not directly compete with the already-existing seaports in the Cai Mep – Thi Vai region.
