The Conclusion of Highway 12 is Expected to Create Opportunities for Thailand

July 2023

Thai transport and tourism analysts have highlighted how the construction of Highway 12 will result in business opportunities. The highway, stretching nearly 800km, is a transport corridor linking Tak in the North with Mukdahan in the Northeast. Expectations of growth were reinforced by the government’s announcement of the completion of the final phase of Highway 12. The road is part of the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), which is predicted to benefit the transport and tourism industries as it links Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar, resulting in quicker transport time and lower freight damage. According to the Thai Finance Ministry, the Corridor will increase transborder trade by at least 50%.

The Thai government has also announced that it is developing a special economic zone (SEZ) in Mae Sot. Highway 12 will increase its potential and will make the SEZ an attractive investment destination. Thailand is already one of the most important gateways to the region, with the strengthened road network reinforcing its role while creating business opportunities for hoteliers, food shops and fuel stations. The Thai government expects Highway 12 to be an engine for tourism in the region, especially in Tak’s five border districts, following an overhaul of immigration services. The new highway is also predicted to facilitate regional mobility, leading to more talent being available for Thailand’s industrial sector.
