Indonesia’s Electricity Company Forms Joint Venture for Renewable Energy Manufacturing

November 2023

PLN, Indonesia’s State-owned electricity company, is partnering with Trina Solar, Sinar Mas, and Agra Surya Energi to create a joint venture focused on renewable energy manufacturing. This collaboration signifies a significant step in PLN’s entry into the growing renewable energy sector.  PLN and the aforementioned companies will collaborate on the establishment of a smart grid to serve as the foundation for clean energy electricity in Indonesia.

The objective of this initiative is to promote the progress of new and renewable energy (NRE) in Indonesia. The collaboration entails establishing a new entity named PT Trina Daya Agra Energy (TDAE), with a specific focus on manufacturing solar cells and panels. TDAE is a merger between Trina Solar Co. Ltd. and a partnership involving PT Dian Swaistika Sentosa and PT Agra Surya Energy. Significantly, the construction of the largest Solar Cell and Panel Factory in Indonesia is underway in the Kendal Industrial Area, Central Java.

In pursuit of ambitious production goals set at 1 gigawatt peak (GWP), the joint venture will utilize Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact )TOPCon) technology. This advanced technology, not currently utilized in Indonesia’s Solar PV industry, has the capability to enhance solar panel efficiency to 28.7%, marking a substantial improvement from the existing average efficiency of around 20%.
