Japan’s Healthcare Firms Expand Footprint in Vietnam

February 2021

According to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Japanese companies operating in the healthcare sector are increasing their presence in Vietnam through both manufacturing, sales and financial investment activities. Some notable examples mentioned in a recent JETRO report include:

  • Daiichi Sankyo, the second-largest pharmaceutical company in Japan, has opened its fully-owned subsidiary in the country for sales activities.
  • Matsuoka Corporation has invested USD 28 million in a new factory in Vietnam for the production of protective wear.
  • Nipro Pharma Corporation, the biggest prescription drug contract manufacturer of Japan, is expanding its operations in Vietnam with a new project worth USD 300 million in the Saigon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP).

Experts from JETRO predict that in addition to manufacturing, the Vietnamese healthcare sector will receive more interest from Japanese investors, with leading government-owned pharmaceutical companies planning to make moves in this direction over the coming months.
