Malaysia Aviation Group Presents Sustainability Blueprint, Aims Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050

April 2021

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the country’s leading aviation organization, presented its new Sustainability Blueprint to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Under the Sustainability Blueprint, MAG has underlined 66 initiatives across 23 sustainability sectors from five core areas namely, Economic, Governance, Safety, and Security, Environmental and Social. The Group’s new goals are to reduce the overall CO2 emission by 25 million kilograms in 2021. It also targets to reach 50% usage of biodegradable materials for inflight operations and 50% of the ground and inflight waste recycled and upcycled by 2025 onwards. This is in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030.
Some initiatives have been implemented such as the usage of idle reverse thrust power on long runways such as in London’s Heathrow Airport which saves 18 kg of fuel or 3,420 kg of CO2, taxiing aircraft with one engine after landing to save 50 kg of fuel or 158 kg of CO2, sub-cycling projects to transform waste items such as leather seats, lifejackets and uniforms into handbags, aprons and toiletry bags and the launch of e-AHAN, a digital-based platform by its ground handling unit AeroDarat to automate the process of billing processes. It has also been involved in carbon offsetting initiatives in line with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
MAG is the parent company of national carrier Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, MASwings, Amal, MABkargo, AeroDarat Services, and MAB Academy.
