Malaysia is looking at possible collaborations in the field of emerging technologies during the September 2022 ITU PP22 (Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union) in Romania. The Malaysian Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, led the government delegation in establishing agreements with several countries, such as the United Kingdom and Somalia.
Annuar met with the UK’s Tech and Digital Economy Minister Damian Collins at the event to form an agreement focusing on emerging technologies, including the digital economy and cyber security. The bilateral discussion also covered investments in the digital technology industry of both countries. Malaysia has also agreed to explore cooperation in cyber security with Somalia through the active role of Cyber Security Malaysia (CSM) in providing related training and expertise. The meeting was completed between Annuar and Somali Communications and Technology Minister Jama Hassan Khalif. Somalia has invited Malaysia to explore investment opportunities, including in the oil and gas sector.
During the meetings, the Malaysian delegation shared the latest developments regarding its infrastructure interconnectivity, including plans to achieve 100% internet coverage by 2025 and the initiative to equip Malaysians with digital capabilities through various initiatives under the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The benefit of Keluarga Malaysia Digital Economy Centres (PEDi) to provide opportunities to those without access to the internet and gadgets to be involved in the digital economy was also discussed.
