Tenaga Nasional Drives Development in EV and Broadband Infrastructure

March 2022

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s largest utility provider, has been accelerating the national progress in electric vehicle (EV) and Broadband Infrastructure through cooperative partnerships. This is in line with the firm’s efforts to be part of the high-income nation aspiration by leveraging on the country’s sustainability and digital connectivity frameworks.

In February 2022, TNB inked a strategic partnership with the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IOT Institute (MARii) for the development of the EV ecosystem. The partners will look at the deployment of Mobility as a Service (MAAS) and related initiatives in the local automotive market. TNB will assist in the establishment of the EV Interoperability Centre (EVIC) in Cyberjaya, which will include power distribution and grid networks, establish guidelines for EV expansion nationwide. MARii is also working with the International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) to construct the EVIC to focus on energy generation and storage technology.

Additionally, TNB’s wholly-owned subsidiary Allo Technology Sdn Bhd will be expanding its high-speed broadband connectivity to 300,000 premises in Peninsular Malaysia by end of 2022. More than 180,000 premises in Melaka, Perak, Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor currently have access to the optic infrastructure network. TNB noted that the backbone of this service is its fiber-optic network covering 18,000 kilometers that will provide broad infrastructure coverage through telecommunications towers across the peninsular region.
