Malaysia Invests USD 6.4 million in Talent R&D for Aerospace and Medical Devices Sectors

April 2024

The Malaysian government has allocated a grant of MYR 30 million (USD 6.4 million) to Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science & Technology (CREST), an industry-driven organization focused on fostering Malaysia’s key sectors by cultivating a robust R&D environment. This funding aims to address the imperative need for skilled professionals to bolster the growth of the aerospace and medical devices industries.

In collaboration with the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Association (MAIA) and the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries (AMMI), CREST has introduced the Upskilling Grant for the Aerospace and Medical Devices Industries. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been formalized to solidify this partnership, aiming to enhance the workforce’s alignment with industry needs. The Upskilling Grant, structured to be completed within one year, encompasses four programs aimed at talent development within the aerospace and medical devices industries. These initiatives include upskilling the current workforce, providing opportunities for unemployed individuals, enhancing the technical capabilities of educational institutions, and offering early intervention programs for tertiary students in collaboration with industry partners.

CREST stated that it is committed to advancing talent development, having collaborated closely with universities and industry leaders over the past 11 years to offer tailored programs addressing industry needs. These initiatives aim to bridge skill gaps and equip students with essential skills for success in evolving work environments, facilitated by strategic partnerships that provide industry-specific knowledge and expertise, particularly in Malaysia’s electrical and electronics (E&E) and Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) sectors.
