Malaysia’s MHTC and Mayo Clinic Ink MoU to Boost International Healthcare Standards

October 2023

The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), a government agency under the Ministry of Health Malaysia tasked to promoting Malaysia as a premier healthcare destination internationally has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with US-based non-for-profit academic medical center and consultancy, Mayo Clinic Global Consulting. With this agreement, MHTC is advocating its partner and affiliate hospitals to collaborate with Mayo Clinic, aiming to solidify Malaysia’s position as a premier medical and healthcare hub.

The objective of this MoU is to amplify the quality and accessibility of Malaysia’s healthcare services, tapping into Mayo Clinic’s extensive expertise in clinical practices, policy, and infrastructure. Key areas of collaboration include enhancing clinical service standards, promoting medical education, consulting services, and establishing specialized centers for oncology and cardiology, among other initiatives.

Over the last decade, Malaysia has welcomed over 10 million healthcare tourists from various regions. Boosted by the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Industry Blueprint 2021–2025, MHTC currently has 83 member hospitals actively promoting medical tourism. Before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare tourism sector made significant contributions to Malaysia’s economy, witnessing a 90% increase in healthcare travelers from 2011 to 2019 and generating a revenue of MYR 1.7 billion (USD 363 million) in 2019.
