More Malaysian Companies Venturing into Medical Supplies Manufacturing Driven by COVID-19

May 2020

A growing number of Malaysian companies reportedly are venturing into medical supplies manufacturing, following the rapid surge in demand from domestic and global communities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This occurrence is expected to continue for longer term, with many companies considering to use their core competencies and available resources to venture into the healthcare sector.

Precision-machined components specialist, Notion VTec Bhd is planning to manufacture protective face shields and components related to medical ventilators by end of May at its main factory. Another company SCGM Bhd, a thermoform food packaging manufacturer has expanded its product portfolio by developing and supplying medical face shields and masks, with mass production targeted in mid-April. SCGM is now seeking to establish new supply networks in other markets and have received orders from Singapore.

In a similar vein, K-One Technology Bhd, a total technology solutions provider of Internet of Things (IoT) products and healthcare devices has been expanding its portfolio into the manufacturing of ventilators. The preparation is undergoing for the Q3 2020 production, subject to necessary approvals from Medical Device Authority under the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Member companies of the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) and the Federation of Malaysian Fashion, Textile and Apparel (FMFTA) have been collaborating to address the shortage of personal protection equipment (PPE) supplies in Malaysia. MPMA members repurposed their machines to produce non-woven material in order to make PPEs, while FMFTA members sew the jumpsuits, isolation gowns, head covers, and boot covers. All member companies are committed to ensure that the production of the PPEs conforms to MOH’s requirements.
