MoU Signed in Vietnam for Public Private Collaboration in Plastic Waste Management

March 2020

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build public private in plastic waste management collaboration towards a circular economy was signed in Hanoi on 19 February 2020. This agreement was signed between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Dow Chemical Co Ltd Vietnam (Dow Vietnam), Siam Cement Group (SCG), and Unilever Vietnam International Co Ltd (Unilever Vietnam) and will have an emphasis on single-use plastic collection and recycling.

The collaboration’s goals are to share knowledge, transfer technology, raise public awareness, promote policy dialogue in building a circular economy in plastic waste management, and recycling on a national scale. After the signing ceremony of the MoU, the Ministry laid out plans for a joint working group to define and carry out specific projects to raise public awareness about plastic waste mitigation.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan said plastic waste is an important challenge for a developing country like Vietnam. Vietnam has committed to taking actions towards reducing plastic waste to protect the marine ecological Environment. In 2017, Vietnam officially joined the list of 127 countries adopting a resolution of the UN Environment Assembly on addressing plastic waste and marine debris.  The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has signed a protocol with the World Economic Forum on cooperation to tackle plastic waste, and established an anti-plastic coalition and packaging recycling organization in Vietnam (PRO Vietnam).
