Japanese Firms Enter Durian Cultivation in Malaysia

PLS Plantations’ 51%-owned unit PLS LESB has entered into an of agreement with Millennium Agriculture Technology Sdn Bhd (MAT) and its parent, MyFarm Inc Japan. The parties will collaborate in the commercial exploitation of up to 1,000 ha of durian plantation being cultivated and developed by the joint-venture (JV) company.

MyFarm is a Kyoto-based Japanese integrated agriculture consultancy and farmland reactivating network. It focuses on the regeneration of abandoned farmland and monetization business, seed business, training and education business, connection and distribution business and providing support to companies entering the agricultural industry, including commercialization.

According to PLS Plantations, the JV partnership will pave the way for Japanese technology transfer in agriculture on a scale never seen before in Malaysia, and it would boost PLS Plantations’ core competencies as a leading producer of export-quality agriculture and aquaculture produce,” Lim said in a statement.

The Japanese investment, which is expected to be completed this year, will see the deployment of modern Japanese agricultural practices for the planting of “Musang King” durian species as part of the project.
