Port Authority of Thailand Launches strategy to Enhance Sustainability and Efficiency

August 2024

The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) recently introduced a development strategy focused on enhancing sustainability and community well-being through advanced technology and green energy adoption. Kriengkrai Chaisiriwongsuk, PAT’s Director General, expressed the agency’s aspiration to lead in sustainable management.

The strategy includes a dust-reduction action plan, transitioning to electric power, and advancing services with modern technology, aligning with the government’s broader sustainable development goals. Environmental challenges, such as global warming and pollution, particularly PM2.5 fine dust particles, are significantly impacting lives. The Transport Ministry, led by Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri, has urged all departments to adopt a ‘Green and Safe Transport’ policy to ensure access to eco-friendly transport systems.

As part of the Transport Ministry, PAT acknowledges its responsibility to provide environmentally friendly and safe transport options. The agency has established environmental management policies, aiming to become a green port to improve the quality of life for local communities. One initiative promotes boat transport over truck transport, potentially reducing the number of trucks by up to 1,000.

PAT is addressing the issue of PM2.5 through measures such as campaigns to turn off Mechanical Handling Equipment engines when not in use, using high-pressure misting to reduce dust levels, and monitoring black smoke from trucks at Bangkok Port. Recognizing the importance of renewable energy, PAT has installed a solar roof system in its warehouse and Bangkok Port area, generating 4.37 MWh/year of electricity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2,547 tonnes of CO2 annually.

PAT is upgrading Bangkok Port to become a regional logistics hub, supporting goods management to add value. Projects like the Free Zone Warehouse and Multimodal Transport and Distribution Center aim to reduce logistics costs and meet customer and business needs.

Future plans include a roadmap to support environmental development, reduce carbon emissions, and control pollution, with initiatives such as transitioning Mechanical Handling Equipment to electric, adopting green building concepts, and implementing energy-saving technology. Automation and AI will also be integrated to enhance efficiency, security, and task accuracy.
