The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) board has approved a USD 287.5 million allocation for the Philippines’ infrastructure flagship projects, including the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)’s National Broadband Program (NBP). This funding aims to enhance the country’s digital connectivity and address disparities in broadband access.
The approved budget will support the Philippine Digital Infrastructure Project (PDIP) and cover adjustments for nine other ongoing government projects. NEDA chief Arsenio Balisacan highlighted that this funding will accelerate broadband upgrades, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Additionally, strengthening cybersecurity is a key component of this investment.
The USD 287.5 million allocation, financed through official development assistance from the World Bank, focuses on improving broadband connectivity and providing high-speed internet access to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs). The project aims to enhance the nation’s digital infrastructure, bridge connectivity gaps, stimulate private sector investments, and bolster cybersecurity measures.
A recent World Bank report emphasized the need for increased investment in broadband infrastructure, noting that the Philippines lags behind its Asian neighbors in internet speed, affordability, and access.
The digital infrastructure project includes the construction of a comprehensive broadband network across the archipelago, consisting of five major components: backbone network, middle-mile network, access network (last-mile), network security, and project management support. Balisacan emphasized that improved broadband services will open up opportunities for Filipinos, including remote work and access to essential public and private services.
In addition to the PDIP, the NEDA board approved adjustments to various parameters of nine ongoing infrastructure projects related to internet connectivity. These adjustments involve changes in project scope, cost, implementation period, and loan validity to ensure successful project completion and further advancements in national infrastructure and connectivity.
