Singaporean Renewable Energy Developer Secures 25-year PPA in Thailand

June 2024

Gurīn Energy, a prominent Asian renewable energy developer headquartered in Singapore, has announced a partnership with Thai conglomerate WHA Utilities and Power Public Company Limited (WHAUP). Together, they have signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), marking a significant milestone for Gurīn Energy’s portfolio in Thailand.

These PPAs commit Gurīn Energy and WHAUP to supplying EGAT with clean, emission-free energy for 25 years. The energy will be sourced from two ground-mounted solar projects under development. The first project, Stella Power 1, located in Ratchaburi province, will have a capacity of 69 megawatts (MW) and is scheduled to be commissioned in 2029, providing electricity for 49,800 households annually. The second project, Stella Power 2, located in Kanchanaburi province, will have a capacity of 59 MW and is set to go online in 2030, powering 43,400 households each year. Together, these projects will create over 530 jobs for local communities and prevent an estimated 2 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the duration of the PPAs.

This announcement signifies a major advancement for Gurīn Energy’s first projects in Thailand. Gurīn Energy and WHAUP secured successful bids for these large-scale solar projects through their combined expertise and resources, responding to the Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand’s (ERC) Big-Lot feed-in-tariff (FiT) tender for 5.2 gigawatts (GW) of renewable electricity.

Ms. Ratchaneewan Pulnil, Country Manager of Gurīn Energy in Thailand, expressed excitement about the secured PPAs with WHAUP, emphasizing the mutual commitment to advancing a low-carbon economy in Thailand and showcasing Gurīn Energy’s capability to deliver clean energy solutions.

Mr. Somkiat Masunthasuwun, Chief Executive Officer of WHAUP, highlighted the collaboration’s importance, noting that the combined expertise in renewable energy development led to the selection of Stella Power 1 and Stella Power 2 by the ERC. These projects will contribute 128 MW of clean energy to Thailand’s national energy mix, underscoring the importance of collaboration in achieving the country’s sustainability goals.
