US-Vietnam to Strengthen Climate Change Cooperation

March 2022

The US will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Vietnam regarding climate change response in order to achieve the goals set by leaders of the two countries at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).

Vietnam highly appreciates the determination and political view of President Joe Biden’s administration, especially Special Presidential Envoy John Kerry, on climate change adaption, and hopes the US will continue to take the lead in combating climate change and promoting international cooperation activities.

In order to achieve important global goals in responding to climate change, Minister To Lam asked the US side to further support Vietnam in responding to climate change.

Particularly, he suggested that the US invests in climate change adaption projects in Vietnam, support the Vietnamese side to improve its capacity for detecting and handling environmental crimes, and build a training center in Vietnam for the environmental police forces of ASEAN countries.

Regarding the efforts against climate change, Vietnam has reviewed and completed the national electricity development planning for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2045, in line with the 2050 goal of net-zero emissions; developed plans to implement the global declaration on the transition of coal-fired power to clean energy and to reduce methane by 30% and actively facilitated and cleared hurdles for investors in Vietnam’s climate change and renewable energy projects.

Vietnam and the US continue to further enhance collaboration in education training, health care, humanitarian affairs and the digital economy.
