Vietjet Air to Team with SAF One to Promote Sustainable Fuels in Vietnam

January 2024

In November 2023, Vietnam’s low-cost carrier Vietjet Air and aviation solution provider SAF One inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to partner on the provision of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Vietnam. The MoU was signed during the visit of Vietnam’s Prime to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where SAF One is headquartered. Accordingly, the two companies will collaborate to develop, supply, and deploy SAF in the Southeast Asian nation.

The agreement positions Vietjet as a leader in researching, developing, and employing sustainable aviation fuel. SAF, derived from waste materials like used cooking oil, offers a substantial reduction in environmental carbon emissions compared to traditional fuels.

SAF One stated that the collaboration with Vietjet aims to provide technology-agnostic SAF solutions in Vietnam, showcasing the company’s commitment to offering global solutions to the industry. Meanwhile, Vietjet Air takes pride in being a leading airline dedicated to contributing to the sustainable development of the aviation sector, emphasizing the support from SAF One in the use of sustainable aviation fuel.

Currently, Vietjet operates over 200 narrowbody and widebody Airbus aircraft on more than 150 routes across the Asia-Pacific region, with another 15 Airbus and Boeing jets to be funded and delivered in 2024.

Aviation data group OAG ranked Vietnam as the third largest aviation market in Southeast Asia in terms of airline seats, only behind Indonesia and Thailand. In addition, the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City route was the busiest domestic route in the region, with Ho Chi Minh being the sixth busiest airport based on total seats scheduled.
