Vietnam and South Korea Sign MOU for Building AI Global Ecosystem in Vietnam

November 2023

Vietnam and South Korea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology in five areas: medical, healthcare, smart cities, and automation in Vietnam’s central coast city of Da Nang, which would position Vietnam as a hub for AI innovation worldwide.

This promising development marks positive progress between the two nations since the inception of the Vietnam Innovation Network in Korea (VINK). This initiative unveiled the Da Nang-Seoul Start-up Innovation Centre and the Vietnam-Korea AI (VKAI) Hub in Da Nang City in early October 2023.

The VKAI Hub partnered with the Korea Artificial Intelligence Association (KORAIA), S-LAB (a member of VINK), the research center of Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital, and other relevant partners from South Korea to boost and connect the global AI ecology system, public health, and innovation between Vietnam and the world.

Among these collaborative endeavors, Hospital No 199 and Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital are jointly developing a global AI healthcare system. This initiative is a promising step towards delivering healthcare services to a broad spectrum of individuals, including residents, tourists, and foreign visitors within Vietnam’s central region and beyond.

Previously, EM&AI company and two partners – AI20X Vietnam and WeNet – signed strategic agreements on generative AI Vagent (voice bot), a solution for automatic calls and messages in Vietnamese and English, as well as marketing and customer care AI systems.

In terms of ICT education, the Vietnam-Korea Friendship Information Technology University began training the first 500 semiconductor and chip design engineers in central Vietnam in 2024-2027.

Da Nang’s digital economy, comprising 900 IT businesses and a workforce of 115,000 individuals, constitutes around 20% of the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in 2022.
