Vietnam Government Calls for Improvements in the Water Sector

September 2020

A new directive from Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has called for strengthening the management of clean water production and trading activities in Vietnam, urging ministries, agencies and stakeholders to complete legal frameworks and adopt new models and technologies to ensure sufficient clean water.

The Prime Minister encouraged the development of new research, new investment models and new technologies to manage, operate and monitor water production and supply. Moreover, the Ministry of Construction has been asked to develop a project on water management collaborating with the private sector.

According to the International Water Resources Association, Vietnam is now in the group of countries that face water shortage. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment estimates that Vietnam’s average availability of water will halve by 2025. Statistics from the environment ministry and health ministry show that about 9,000 people in Vietnam die yearly because of poor hygiene and water resources, and about 200,000 people in the country have cancer related to water pollution.
