Evonik’s recent expansion of its methionine production facility on Jurong Island adds 40,000 tonnes to its annual output, bringing the total capacity to 340,000 tonnes per year. Methionine, a critical protein component in animal feed, plays a key role in supporting the growing demand for meat consumption in Asia. The expansion positions Evonik’s Singapore facility as the world’s largest methionine production site, accounting for nearly 50% of the company’s global methionine capacity, which stands at 700,000 tonnes annually. This boost in production further solidifies Evonik’s dominance in the methionine market, with a global market share exceeding 40%.
Evonik’s operations in Singapore have grown significantly since the company first entered the market in 1969, with investments surpassing USD 1 billion. The company’s two methionine plants, inaugurated in 2014 and 2019, are located within the same compound on Jurong Island, now expanded to meet increased demand. In addition to methionine production, Evonik is constructing a biodiesel catalyst production plant, set to be the largest of its kind globally, further enhancing its presence in Singapore’s energy and chemicals sector.
The expansion aligns with both Evonik’s and Singapore’s sustainability goals. The company has reduced the product carbon footprint of its methionine production by 6%, contributing to Singapore’s Sustainable Jurong Island strategy, which aims to increase sustainable product output by 1.5 times from 2019 levels by 2030. Singapore’s broader goal includes achieving two million tonnes of carbon abatement annually through low-carbon solutions, further supported by Evonik’s energy-efficient production methods and innovations in green chemical products.
