The National Council for Special Economic Zones (KEK) in Indonesia has approved proposals for three new special economic zones (SEZs) in Batam, Tangerang, and Morowali. These SEZs target total investments of IDR 161 trillion (USD 9.8 billion) and will be recommended to the Indonesian President for official approval through government regulations.
In Tangerang, the Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) area will host an SEZ focused on education and international health services, propelled by digital technology. This SEZ, spanning 59.68 hectares, is expected to attract IDR 18.8 trillion (USD 1.1 billion) in investments and create 13,446 jobs. It will feature Monash University and aim to foster research in digital economy and technology, support the development of 100 startups and integrate health services with the creative industry.
The Batam SEZ will partner with India’s Apollo Hospital to enhance healthcare in the Riau Islands, while the Morowali SEZ will focus on nickel development with PT Vale’s involvement.
These SEZs aim to bolster Indonesia’s competitive edge, generate employment, and ensure sustainable development, in line with Government Regulation Number 40 of 2021. The focus on service-oriented SEZs is intended to minimize foreign exchange outflows and maximize earnings, transforming SEZ development through technological and human resource advancements.
