Indonesian and South Korean Telecommunications Companies Collaborate on Smart City Project

January 2024

South Korean telecommunications company KT Corp., and its Indonesian counterpart Telkom Indonesia have recently inked a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on a smart city project in Indonesia’s forthcoming capital, Nusantara. The agreement involves KT sharing its advanced ICT technologies, encompassing quantum cryptography, cybersecurity, and smart city solutions with Telkom Indonesia.

Indonesia aims to address the persistent issues of congestion and pollution in the current capital, Jakarta, which houses around 11.2 million people. In response, Indonesia has chosen to relocate its capital to Nusantara on the island of Borneo, with construction work commenced on July 2022. Nusantara, spanning 2,560 square kilometers, is slated to be inaugurated on August 17, 2024, coinciding with Indonesian Independence Day.

With a joint task force team, the two companies will explore business models for data centers, traffic systems, energy use, and the incorporation of artificial intelligence in the new capital. The collaboration emphasizes the significance of security and stability in the smart city project, with Telkom Indonesia expressing confidence in KT’s reliable and efficient technologies. The partnership aligns with Indonesia’s endeavor to build a sustainable city environment. The government of Indonesia stressed that it welcomes Korean companies to participate in  the development of its new capital.
