Indonesia’s immigration authorities have implemented the HID U.ARE.U Camera Identification System as the facial recognition element for the automated border crossing gates across Batam ports. The aim is to address the severe congestion caused by outdated manual identity verification processes. With Batam Center’s five seaports accommodating around 500,000 travelers annually, it is one of the busiest border checkpoints for visitors from Singapore and Malaysia, as well as for Indonesians traveling between islands.
HID’s facial recognition technology, specifically the HID U.ARE.U Camera Identification System, was chosen for the task. This hybrid biometric system combines a self-serve gate, HID’s ATOM document reader, and facial recognition to verify passenger identity and facilitate secure and expedited border crossings. The system’s two-step process involves scanning a user’s passport to open the first gate, followed by a facial scan using the U.ARE.U camera to match biometrics with the ID document, thereby opening the second gate.
The specialized U.ARE.U camera, featuring patented multispectral imaging (MSI) technology and AI, enhances performance in poor lighting conditions and includes on-device biometric processing for face detection, capture, image quality checks, presentation attack detection (PAD), and passive liveness detection. Indonesia’s Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, notes that travelers appreciate the efficiency of the new Autogate system, as it drastically decreases wait queues and empowers passengers with a fast and convenient self-service process.
