Malaysia has made remarkable strides in information and communication technology (ICT) development, ascending to the 15th spot globally and ranking third in the ASEAN region in the 2023 ICT Development Index (IDI) released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
With a score of 94.5 out of 100, Malaysia has surpassed the global average score of 72.8 points, showcasing significant progress towards achieving universal and meaningful connectivity objectives. The IDI 2023, evaluating ten indicators, highlights Malaysia’s achievements in near-universal coverage of 4G or LTE mobile networks, high mobile-broadband subscriptions, affordable prices for mobile and fixed-broadband services, as well as substantial rates of Internet usage, mobile phone ownership, and Internet traffic. Compared to the 2015 IDI, Malaysia has advanced from the eighth position in the Asia Pacific Region.
This noteworthy accomplishment underscores the collaborative efforts of the government and the private sector in investing in digital technology and infrastructure, particularly in enhancing high-speed internet connectivity and leveraging advancements in telecommunications technology. The establishment of Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), which provides 5G network services as part of the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDigital), further cements Malaysia’s position at the forefront of the digital economy by 2030. With its forward-looking approach, minimal digital restrictions compared to neighboring countries, and a commitment to continuous innovation and strategic planning, Malaysia is poised to capitalize on its potential and lead the way in shaping the digital future of the region.
