Lenzing Indonesia Receives EU Ecolabel for Environmentally Friendly Fiber Production

October 2023

The Lenzing Group, a global manufacturer of specialty cellulose fibers for the textile and nonwoven sectors, has gained EU Ecolabel accreditation for its fibers manufactured in Indonesia. This recognition signifies that Lenzing fibers manufactured in Purwakarta (PT South Pacific Viscose) fulfill stringent environmental requirements. Lenzing intends to meet the rapidly expanding demand for eco-friendly viscose fibers by shifting its manufacturing facilities to specialized viscose.

Lenzing has reduced its particular emissions thanks to a considerable investment of EUR 100 million (USD 105.1 million) in modernizing the Indonesian facility. Furthermore, the site has just begun utilizing energy from renewable sources. It is focusing on biomass conversion following Lenzing’s aims of decreasing group-wide carbon emissions per ton of product sold by 50% by 2030 and reaching carbon-neutral production by 2050.

Purwakarta plant’s close proximity to value chain partners in Asia-Pacific enables the transportation of a larger quantity of viscose fibers over a shorter distance, reducing the overall carbon footprint of the textile supply chain.

Moreover, Lenzing Ecovero branded viscose fibers, which are produced with up to 50% less fossil energy and water than generic viscose, have been utilized in fashion woven and knitted items such as trendy tops, dresses, T-shirts, and loungewear from top worldwide fashion labels like M&S, H&M, and Levi’s use Lenzing Ecovero branded viscose fibers.

Moreover, Lenzing’s Purwakarta site will be capable of producing the innovative Lenzing Ecovero Black specialty fibers by the end of 2023, which will reduce water and energy usage in fabric dyeing.
