Malaysia Airports Aims to Double Freighter Flights at KLIA in Next 10 Years

November 2020

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the largest airport operator in Malaysia, is planning to double the number of freighter flights at its main airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) over the next 10 years with the launch of its new e-fulfillment hub, Cainiao Aeropolis eWTP Hub, Malaysia. As the country’s cargo volume continues to expand, it aims to enhance airline connectivity via KLIA with new routes and increased flight frequency, belly space utilization, and freighter capacity.

The Cainiao Aeropolis eWTP Hub is a new e-fulfillment hub in KLIA which was established in partnership with Alibaba Group. The 24.28-hectare hub is aimed at strengthening economic recovery and supporting the increase in trade flow in the broader region. Facilities include 24-hour delivery within Malaysia for e-commerce operators and 72-hour delivery to the rest of the world.

This hub will also allow the integration of existing facilities and encourage KLIA airline partners to create new business opportunities with local industry players like Pos Aviation, MABKargo, and Ground Team Red. The final mile delivery for the fulfillment of the goods will be operated by GDex, Pos Laju, and J&T Express. The airport operator plans to increase cargo volume by 700,000 metric tons, doubling KLIA’s current volume to 1.4 million per year by 2029. It will particularly target vertical markets from the automotive, sporting goods, fast-moving fashion and lifestyle, retail electronics, and medical equipment sectors.
