Malaysia Partners with UK Company for Cyber-security Regional Hub

April 2023

Malaysian energy company, Sapura Holdings Bhd is teaming up with UK-based TriCIS Ltd to create a regional center for cyber intelligence solutions through its cyber security subsidiary, Velum Labs Sdn Bhd (VLSB). The partnership was formed in response to the growing cybersecurity risks in the region, where Malaysia was ranked 10th among the top 20 countries targeted by malicious mailings in 2022, according to a recent Kaspersky report.

The partnership will offer cyber security capabilities to governments and private sector clients across the region. Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin, president and group CEO of Sapura Group, stated that the company wants to advance in innovation and unconventional solutions that can position Malaysia at the forefront of sovereign telecommunications technology. As a specialist in designing and engineering highly secure integrated systems, TriCIS Ltd will supply the technical know-how and software expertise in cyber security and cyber intelligence. It is also a trusted provider to the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

In 2022, Kaspersky highlighted that Malaysia saw an increase of 18 million malicious email attachments compared to the previous year. The months of March, May, and June 2022 saw the highest number of triggers in Malaysia. The Malaysian Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has further urged state governments and government organizations to prioritize cybersecurity for infrastructure systems and telecommunication networks.
