Manila Water to Build 12 More Sewage Treatment Plants

November 2022

Manila Water, one of the two major water concessionaires that provide water supply, wastewater, and sanitation services and is covering the East Zone of Metro Manila, will be growing its sewage treatment facilities. Generally, Manila Water is setting aside USD 3.15 billion from 2023 to 2027 in order to improve its service, especially in water supply and wastewater services.

Manila Water is set to build 12 more sewage treatment plants as it continues to fulfill its mandate of providing sewerage and sanitation services to help improve the conditions of the water environment in the metropolis. Currently, the company operates 41 treatment facilities with a capacity of 410 million liters per day (MLD). With this addition, Manila Water targets a 1,156 MLD capacity to cover 100% of its concession area, translating to 715 kilometers of sewer network and serving 7.6 million people.

The wastewater treatment facilities operated by Manila Water use a range of technologies to treat wastes and pollution using various mechanisms and processes. The collection of sewage and septage from residences and businesses, as well as the transportation, thorough treatment, and secure disposal of byproducts, are all included in its wastewater management.

Previously, it undertook a significant project to ensure compliance with the Administrative Order (DAO) 2016-08 of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which included new parameters in biological nutrient removal (BNR) of Nitrogen and Phosphorus. This entailed the diversion of flows from 11 smaller treatment plants to larger facilities and enhanced activated sludge process to 27 others.
