Thailand’s Largest Cement Maker Focuses on Green Manufacturing

April 2022

Siam Cement Group (SCG) is refocusing its operations on green manufacturing. Specifically, it has been recently reported that Thailand’s largest cement maker and industrial conglomerate targets to use more clean energy, develop environmentally friendly products and utilize electric vehicles (EVs).  SCG currently produces 200 MW of electricity from solar energy. This is used for the operations of its Cement and Building Materials Business as well as Petrochemical Business.

The company’s Cement and Green Solution Business plans to increase the use of renewable energy to more than 30% of total energy demand. It targets to grow electricity generated by on-ground and floating solar farms by 97 MW in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75,000 tons a year. The Cement and Green Solution Business’ goal is to achieve net-zero by 2050. Moreover, SCG plans to reduce coal usage by 50% at its cement production facilities.

Recently, SCG launched a new hybrid cement used for structural work. The company claims this is Thailand’s first innovative eco-friendly cement, following hydraulic cement standards based on the use of biomass and heat from the production process as fuel in making cement. SCG has also started using electric trucks at limestone mines, which help reduce both carbon dioxide emissions and PM 2.5 ultra-fine dust.
