Maynilad Allocates USD 3.18 Billion for Wastewater Treatment Projects

April 2023

Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (MWSI), one of the two utility concessionaires in Metro Manila serving the West Zone, has committed PHP 178 billion (USD 3.18 billion) over the next two decades to improve its wastewater management projects. The funds will be used to build infrastructure for the collection and treatment of wastewater generated by households, with a focus on critical needs.

MWSI has prioritized several projects, including the construction of 18 sewerage treatment plants (STPs), the installation of 360 km of new sewer lines, and the upgrading of 17 existing wastewater facilities to meet the Department of Environment and Natural Resources revised effluent standards.

The company currently has ongoing projects in Valenzuela, Caloocan, Las Pinas, and Muntinlupa. These projects will have a combined daily capacity to treat 419 million liters of wastewater from 1.75 million residents. Additionally, MWSI will construct a 140 million liters per day (mld) STP and new sewer lines in Manila.

These initiatives are expected to significantly improve wastewater treatment and management in the Philippines, reducing environmental pollution and improving public health. The government’s focus on wastewater management aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6, which aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all.
